Tuesday, November 24, 2020 Update

 Good Afternoon:

Thank you students for using our new connector for travel between the buildings as I know old habits go away slowly. Starting this Monday, November 30th, the main connector entry facing west will be open with student dropoff occurring there. Once the school day officially starts, currently 8:00 AM, all students will need to enter the main connector doors for attendance and temperature checks. Seniors arriving after 8:00 AM will also need to check-in there so we have accurate attendance.

This Monday will also have the Collins-Perley Complex bus pickup/dropoff at the South Building's main sign and not at the Fairfield Street entrance. The parking area on Fairfield Street does not leave enough room for the bus.

We are also looking to have some senior parking on campus starting soon. The administration will be meeting with senior class leadership to examine this; hopefully, this meeting will occur right after the break.

And, finally, Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!

Mr. Blanchard

Friday, November 20, 2020 Weekly Administrative Update

Dear BFA Community:

This week saw the grand opening of our stunning new connector, and it could not have been opened at a more fortuitous time. It is not so much the weather to which I refer, but the physical symbolism that this well-designed, beautiful, and spacious connector offers. I will not say overly much about the connector itself as one of our terrific BFA Mercury writers, Adelyne Collins, has already produced a superb piece of journalism that you may read below; also please see the many other diverse articles students have written for the BFA Mercury. This week saw so many valuable connections that we have included more photos, videos, and links than normal.

At the end of the day today, we provided 580 take-home meals for our greater BFA/NCTC community. This terrific community connection follows our Interact students collecting over 1,000 coats for community distribution during the coming weeks. To go along with these incredibly impressive BFA community connections, the National Honor Society continues to collect toiletries and other needed items for the benefit of many of our families. I am in awe of the efforts this week that our staff and students have done to improve the lives of hundreds of our families. We will continue to connect with our community no matter what difficulties are placed in front of us.

I hope everyone has a positive weekend and a family connecting Thanksgiving. Please do enjoy tonight’s 7:00 PM BFA Theater production of The Brothers Grimm (link below).

Sincerely,
Brett Blanchard
Principal

Friday, November 13, 2020 Weekly Administrative Update

Dear BFA Community:

This week included one of our nation’s most important holidays, Veterans Day. At BFA, we try to be ever mindful of all that has been done, and all that continues to be done so that we have an unparalleled level of freedom to teach, learn, and live. I am extremely proud of our virtual Veterans Day Assembly that combined staff, students, community members, and several local color guards to honor all our veterans. To view our assembly, please click on the link below.

On Thursday of this week, The BFA Admin Team invited staff to enjoy a MainSqueeze juice or smoothie. This staff event was held to show appreciation for their dedication during these challenging times as we strive to engage our students five days a week.

Please also see Mrs. Kattam's blog information regarding report cards, scoring, and semester two schedule. This information is also being sent home.

Sincerely,
Brett Blanchard

Quarter 1 Report Card and Progress Reports

Q1 Report Cards and S1 Progress Reports will go live on the Unified Classroom at 4:30 this evening. The following letter will answer some questions you may have about how to read the reports. This letter will be mailed out with the reports and the Semester 2 schedule next week.

Dear parent/guardian;

Enclosed please find your students quarter one report card.  This report card includes BFA quarter-long (.5 credit) and semester-long (1 credit) classes.

  • Quarter-one scores are final and reflected as a letter grade in the completed course scores section. Quarter-one proficiency scores are listed under the Proficiency-Based Graduation Requirements section.
  • Semester-long scores are a progress report located in the S1 column, reflected as a numeric proficiency score.
  • On transcripts, when courses are completed scores will be reflected as both a numeric grade and a traditional letter grade.

NCTC: Students who are enrolled in NCTC courses will receive a separate report from Northwest Career & Technical Center. Per the Vermont State Board of Education Career and Technical Education State Board Regulations, NCTC recommends credit and shared scores to be translated and transcripted by the sending high schools. This translation will occur at the end of the semester.

Incompletes: Students who had incomplete (INC) scores resulting from the spring 2020 semester were scheduled into Proficiency Recovery periods during semester one Enrichment. Incompletes from the spring can only be remediated until the end of semester one. To see which recovery sections your student is scheduled in, refer to their schedule list view in Powerschool.

There are two more Proficiency Recovery blocks available before the end of the semester:

Nov 16-Dec 11 and Dec 14-Jan 15. On January 22nd all classes that are still INC from last spring will be changed to Credit Denied (CD). Those classes will have to be retaken to earn credit. If you have questions about your students INC's please reach out to their advisor or counselor.

Friday, November 6, 2020 Weekly Administrative Update

Dear BFA Community:

It's hard to believe that we've already completed the first full week of November. When I think of November, I think of gratitude and all that I am thankful for. This year, I am especially thankful for good health during these challenging times. Our college students will soon be coming home (including my daughter) to enjoy the holidays and I've included some health recommendations at the bottom of this blog.

I am also thankful for the work that I do with students every day. This past week brought parent conferences and I hope that you had an opportunity to meet virtually with your teen's teachers and learned more about what they've been accomplishing in this hybrid environment. Next week, begins our second quarter and I encourage you to reach out if you have any further questions.

Today was a non-student day and I am writing this as I watch a large number of our students engaged in vibrant, positive competition during an all-day student field day at the Plex. Twenty teams competed in broomball starting at 8 AM (and nary a kid was late!), went on to badminton, and created new teams to compete in volleyball. Patience and dedication of the students were shown as they waited outside through health screenings and once we reached capacity for teams to leave so they could then play. It was especially nice to see some of this to remind me of all that is good in life, and that when we leave it to students, they will find a way to be positively engaged. Personally and professionally, I need to give open thanks to many of our dedicated staff who volunteered to spend their day with our BFA kids. Mary Brouillette, Shawn Lefebvre, and Theresa Callan arrived at 7 AM to see everything was set up, organized, and will not depart until late in the afternoon in order to take care of all the cleanup. Josh Corrigan, Dan Marlow, Chris Pepin, Stephanie Hodgeman, and Michael Atwood also arrived throughout the day to help see the event was a great one. And as collaboration and teamwork are the keys to any successful large event, Tim Viens and Mark Deso saw the playing fields were lined, with equipment ready to go.

Over the years Thanksgiving has become my favorite holiday. The lack of pomp and hype is a blessing, and being able to spend quality time with friends and family, especially in today's world, is the greatest of good fortune. Being part of today's BFA Student Field Day reminded me of the importance of being thankful for the joy of working with our BFA kids.

Sincerely,
Brett Blanchard
Principal

Superintendent Search:
The Maple Run Unified School Board seeks two-parent/community members to participate in the Superintendent Selection Committee. Interested parties should email Brenda Comstock bcomstock@maplerun.org no later than Monday, November 16, indicating your desire to participate and in what capacity: parent/community member or community member.

Health Recommendation:
With the holidays approaching, for college students returning to Vermont homes, and a growing list of people who are “close contacts” of people with COVID-19, it’s important to know what to do if someone in your home is under quarantine.

If you have out-of-state visitors in your home who come from a red or yellow county, they need to quarantine for 14 days (or the duration of their stay). This means they should:
• Wear a mask in common spaces
• Use a separate bathroom
• Eat separately
• Stay 6 feet apart and otherwise not be in close contact with other household members

Household members who are NOT under quarantine do not then also need to quarantine – meaning they can go to school, work, or the grocery store. However, be sure to disinfect commonly touched surfaces, and check yourself for symptoms for 14 days. The same guidance applies to people living with Vermonters who leave the state to go visit a red or yellow county, and people living with close contacts. If you are in quarantine, you have the option to get a PCR test after seven days. If you test negative and have no symptoms, you can end your quarantine. If you develop symptoms during quarantine, please consider getting tested.
