BFA ARTS NIGHT DECEMBER 9th

The schedule for the entire event is as follows:
4:00-5:00 Workshops: BFA/Various Locations: Enter through the BFA Connector/Main Entrance
5:00-6:00 Gallery Exhibit, Strings and Chamber Singers Concert, light refreshments in the BFA Connector
6:00-6:15 Musical Performance: Opening of Into the Woods, from the fall Musical in the Performing Arts Center
(The Following Events occur simultaneously. You may move from venue to venue to attend various events. Please do not leave mid-performance. A detailed schedule will be provided at the event and will be available via the BFA website. Student ambassadors will be present to support guests on site.)
6:15-8:00 Dance performances, Improv Team and more in the Performing Arts Center
6:15-8:00 Jazz Band, Chorus, Featured Soloists and more in the BFA Gym
6:15-8:00 There will be open studios, Community Mural Banner and Make and Take options in the Art Rooms at BFA
All Events are FREE! **MASKS REQUIRED AT ALL EVENTS.

Sociology of Crime Class News:

Here are a few pictures from our field trip to the NW Family Foods Center/Foodshelf. 

16 students and two staff members participated in the field trip activity. Many thanks to the BFA faculty, staff, and students for their donations. We were able to fill up and deliver two grocery carts of provisions.

The students worked very hard to stack and organize provisions for about 50 minutes. They also engaged in an orientation activity about the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity and held a brief group discussion about poverty, hunger, and crime.

Additionally, we had some guest speakers.

Lisa Pepe was here to discuss the restorative justice center with our sociology of crime class and how the practices of restorative justice can be applied to the American criminal justice system.

Tim Smith and Chip Sawyer were here to discuss with our American experience students how our westward expansion compelling question, ‘does growth always lead to progress?’ is relevant to the growth and progress to the Downtown St. Albans developments.

We would like to express thanks to our guest speakers as well as the importance of involving the community in the classroom.

Junior Future Planning Day:

The BFA School Counseling department hosted our first Junior Future Planning Day in the PAC. We were joined by former BFA graduate, Robbie Maher- student-teacher for Maplerun, Liam Mahabir- WBL, and Katie Gesser-VSAC. We will host multiple events throughout the year to support students around resumes, scholarships, college essay writing, and employment/training opportunities.

Our second-year students are competing in a formal styling competition with a focus on either Fantasy or Classic styling. Business Entrepreneur Class:
Students recently had fun sharing their Food Truck Projects and voting on which ideas they would like to invest in. Jacob Holmes had the winning idea with his impressive Monster Mac Food Truck Project. Students did great work on these projects and presentations!

Sports Marketing Class:

Yuki Benjamin is competing against 23 other schools across the nation each week in the Sports Career Consulting Marketing Challenge which has students pick a location for a new football team and come up with all the marketing strategies for the new team. In last week's challenge about Fan Experience, Yuki finished in 2nd place and currently is in 12th place out of 23 teams The other Challenges were about Branding, Ticket Prices, Promotions, Sponsorship, Communication Plans and the last week will feature Digital Media Marketing.

LOGO Contest and Flyer Promotion Winners - Announcement:

Students came up with t-shirt/uniform designs and logos to market their teams. The best logo designs in the class were created by Hannah Hisman, Ayla Shea, and Logan Swainbank.  Upon completion of their Sponsorship Proposal Projects students designed flyers to promote their event.  With the help of the Entrepreneurship Class, the Best Promotional Design of their Flyers went to Hannah Hisman, Ayla Shea, Will Hughes, and Aaron Merchand. 

Music News:
On Wednesday, November 18th the String Ensemble did a virtual master class with Dr. Kasia Sokol-Borup over Zoom. Dr. Sokol-Borup was Maple Run String Educator Alex “Rusty” Charpentier’s college violin instructor in Durango, CO. Now teaching at the University of Utah, Dr. Sokol-Borup met with BFA String Ensemble students for an hour to work on bowing techniques and other very helpful and string-specific topics. During that master class, the entire ensemble performed for her and received helpful critiques on their concert music.

Coats Available for students:
New and Gently Used Winter Coats for students in the GUIDANCE CONFERENCE ROOM. The coats will be there for the next 4 days until Thanksgiving break. Please inform your advisories. The door will be unlocked during lunches and from 2-3:30pm. Students may also come to guidance to shop for a coat.

Artwork in the Connector:

Thanks to a donation from the BFA Booster Club, we are purchasing new frames for displaying student work in the connector.

NCTC Adult Class:
Northwest Career & Technical Center held a very special evening workshop, Butters of Europe, hosted by our Culinary Arts program and delivered by Chef Jean-Louis Gerin—former Chopped champion, James Beard award winner, and President of the Academie Culinaire de France US Delegation (2010-2020). The evening course gave attendees hands-on experience with a diverse range of butter imported from all over France. 

Theater News:

Into the Woods!
Nov. 18, 19, 20th at 7PM with a Matinee at 1PM on the 20th

This Tony Award-Winning Musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault fairy tales, exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. The main characters are taken from "Little Red Riding Hood", "Jack and the Beanstalk", "Rapunzel", and "Cinderella", as well as several others. Driven by different desires, such as attending the ball, having a child, meeting a prince, or getting to granny's house, each character is called to the woods where they meet forces that cause them to change. An allegory for growing up, the audience is asked to question the simplicity of childhood and the reality of our quest for "happily ever after". With beautiful music and a lovely dose of both heart and humor, this show is sure to entertain and inspire.

BFA would like to open applications for a FREE SEASON’S PASS to students with transferable skills of 3 or higher in Citizenship and Self Direction in all courses based on their fall progress report (October 2021) or semester 2 report card (June 2021).   In addition, students will be asked to write at least a 4 sentence paragraph describing why they are a good citizen at BFA and are deserving of a free seasons pass.  Should applications exceed 100, students will be selected via a lottery during lunches on November 30, 2021.

Dear BFA/NCTC Community:

Yesterday’s beautifully appropriate Veterans Day ceremony had the BFA Marching Band leading around a thousand students and staff to Taylor Park to pay tribute to our veterans. BFA 9th grader Cadien Shuford spoke wonderfully to the large community audience on what Veterans Day means for him and his family, as well the greater significance of the day. 

This week I also had several meetings on exciting proposals on an all-school assembly, Winter Ball Dance, and a BFA/NCTC Career Day for juniors and seniors. We also plan on having local businesses meet with our students every Wednesday during the enrichment period in order to discuss their particular trade, as well as any internship and/or job opportunities. National Honor Society students honor Veterans:
BFA's NHS students wrote and mailed letters to Veterans in the VA hospital in White River, at the request of the local VFW post.

Into the Woods, a fairy tale mash-up that explores what happens after the “Happily Ever After” begins next week!

All shows are at 7:00 p.m. in the PAC on Thursday 11/18, Friday 11/19, and Saturday 11/20 (with an additional 1:00 p.m. matinee on Saturday!)

This Tony Award-winning musical will feature dozens of BFA students both on and off the stage as well as a live band. We are limiting seating and requiring masks in order to prevent the spread of Covid. Past shows have sold out with a full house, so get your tickets now at the online website.
