Maple Run’s Mike Campbell Snags NEA Foundation Honor
Mike Campbell, a BFA St. Albans social studies teacher and longtime Maple Run EA leader, is among 43 public school educators across the US to receive the NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence. Recognized for their leadership, excellence in the classroom, family and community engagement, commitment to equity and diversity, and advocacy for the teaching profession, the 43 awardees serve urban, rural, and suburban school communities. “These extraordinary awardees remind us that educators are the backbone of our communities and our democracy,” said NEA Foundation CEO Sara A. Upcoming PSAT Info

Important PSAT Information:

The PSAT will be given on October 25, 2023 at BFA.
Students need to report to the Library by 7:20 am with their fully charged Chromebook.
Students need a photo ID to get into the test-taking area.
There are no phones allowed in the testing area.
Food is permitted during breaks. Breakfast is available in the cafeteria beginning at 6:30 am.

Students signed up for the PSAT must report for a mandatory meeting in the large cafeteria on October 18, 2023.

The meeting starts at 9:40 during Enrichment.
Students must bring their fully charged Chromebooks to the meeting.
Students will need to complete the electronic sign-in process for the PSAT in order to be able to take the test on October 25th.

If you are unable to attend the meeting please come to Guidance before the 18th to make a plan.

This is a friendly reminder that if you have not completed the annual verification form and/or health form; this means, your information may not be up to date! Even if you don't have changes, please verify the current information we have in our system.

Fall Fest Dance

Over 150 students attended! Over $1,000 for raised for prom. Huge shout out to the student council members who worked hard to make sure this dance went smoothly and used their leadership skills to be role models for their peers. And a big thank you to Dino for being a wonderful DJ.

COLLEGE PANEL DISCUSSION

On October 18th, Guidance will host a College Panel Discussion in the PAC from 12:30-1:15. There will be representatives from: Community College of Vermont, Champlain College, St. Michael’s College, and Vermont State University, to talk about their schools. Interested students, please go to Advisory to check in and get a pass before attending this event.

Franklin County "Maker Day" - November 1st, 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
October is Manufacturing Month and Franklin County Industrial Development Corp is hosting an event to bring high school students together to learn more about the job opportunities available in Franklin County.

FCIDC will be providing shuttle transportation for pre-registered high school students to the "Commons area" at MVU in Swanton for technology exhibits including robotics, 3D printing, and other advanced manufacturing technologies. We have also arranged for the Beta Technologies Electric Aircraft Simulation Airstream to be at this event.

Register by October 24th, to be entered into a raffle for a brand new Devinci Mountain Bike provided by Bootlegger Bikes in St. Albans.

Parking🚙🚙🚙- The city of St. Albans has allowed for BFA student parking at the parking garage free of charge. If you would like a parking pass, please stop by City Hall to fill out a form. It has been communicated that if there are incidents of vandalism, unsafe driving and parking, or if trash is left behind, the city will not allow BFA to use the garage. So please represent BFA well.

Messages from Principal Rico

Thank you for a successful and fun spirit week, homecoming pep rally, exciting football game, and Powder Puff game! Tremendous school spirit!! We are off to a great start this year. Walking around and seeing students participating in our spirit week demonstrates that we can have fun along side the hard work that is occurring in classes. We are very proud of the determination and perseverance students have shown since the beginning of the year in meeting the expectations here at BFA. We are working hard, and committed, to support students to continue this same level of determination and persistence as the newness of the school year is fading.

In order to support expectations, please take a moment to read the following messages:

1) Since the beginning of school, we are seeing an increase in food and drink deliveries to students. We are finding that students are missing class time to retrieve deliveries as well as our safety staff handling a large volume of people trying to access the building. We will no longer accept food or drink deliveries from outside of the school. Please remember, at school, students have access to free breakfast and lunch every day. If for some reason, it is a necessity to drop something off for your student, they will receive it by the end of the day. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

2) Re: Student Health: This school year has presented with the typical increase in illness. Per our handbook. “If a student becomes ill during the school day, they must go to the Health Office. If the nurse determines they should be sent home, a parent/guardian will be contacted, and their absence will be excused.” If your student contacts you due to not feeling well and requesting to go home, please direct them to the health office rather than making arrangements to pick them up. If they leave without following the protocol, it will result in an unexcused absence. Please feel free to contact the nurses anytime regarding your student's health so they can support them at school.

Dee Christie

Dee Christie received the Arts Educator of the Year Award

at the Arts Educator Conference!

I have had the privilege of working with Dee for the last 21 years at BFA. Over those years, I have witnessed Dee go above and beyond for students as well as the BFA Community. Dee has taught countless independent studies for students who couldn’t fit art into a schedule or wanted to extend their learning. This means that Dee often took her preparation time to work with kids simply because she cared about students and art. Dee’s impact on the community has ranged from organizing students to paint windows in local businesses as well as murals to brighten the aesthetic and bring art appreciation to the masses. Dee is also a fierce advocate for the arts. She fought to incorporate the Arts into STEM programs to make it a true STEAM class. She is a true arts integrationist. Over the years, she has collaborated with teachers and administrators to develop classes that integrate art into other content areas. She does this because she understands the importance of creation, representation, and expression in the lives of students. Dee Christie deserves this award and we, at BFA, are extremely proud of her. Congratulations.

Powder Puff Football Game

The Comets won 46-28, but everyone wins with Powder Puff when it comes to caring for the community. All funds raised from the event go to Camp-Ta-Kum-Ta and the Jim Bashaw Cancer and Catastrophic Fund, local organizations that help local people and their families in their time of greatest need. PASS Program

BFA is proud to announce participation in the PASS program.

The Parent Advocacy and Student Support Program was created by Title VI Indian Education to provide students with Academic support, post-graduation planning, and enrich their cultural knowledge. The program offers a variety of supports from tutoring to college planning to job application support. Your student does not need to be Abenaki to access this program.
