The BFA Alpine Ski Team spent most of their February break on ski slopes all around the state for the District and States Competitions. Alpine skiing is made up of two events, Giant Slalom and Slalom. Each day of Districts and States is dedicated to one of these events. We first competed in the Northern District Competition at Burke Mountain on Monday, February 24th and Tuesday, February 25. From this District Competition, the top 75% of teams qualify to go to the Vermont States Competition the following week. By the end of the day on Tuesday, we had calculated that the girls team was heading to States! On Monday, March 2nd, the Vermont States GS Competitions were held at Killington and the Slalom was held at the Suicide Six Ski Area the next day.
Our ski season was met with many weather affected obstacles. You would think that snow would be something we would want, but too much snow does not make for a good race course. On race days, however, we were very fortunate for a series of nice weather. There wasn’t a single day this season that was too cold and athletes could spend the day cheering their teammates on and enjoying midweek access to the mountain. The warm weather over the break was no exception.
Although skiing is often seen as an individual sport, the support from teammates and parents really brings everyone together. We are so thankful and fortunate that many of the athletes' parents and families could join us at these events throughout the season and over the break. The cheering could often be heard from the top of the race hill. I had multiple conversations over the week about how awesome it is that each of the teams support each other. At the top of the race hill athletes are often cheering for not only their own teammates, but for their “competitors” as well.
Overall, a fun and successful season in my book!
