Academy Arts Night

Last week the BFA Fine Arts Department presented its second annual “Academy Arts Night.” The evening was created last year as a way of bringing the community into BFA to experience the entire art department. The night began with a reception in the connector that featured BFA student’s original artwork, food, and music by the Chamber Singers, Armand Messier Director, and Chris Leduc, accompanist, and the BFA String Ensemble, directed by Eric Bushey and Alex “Rusty” Charpentier. The String Ensemble was joined by several 8th graders from both City School and SATEC.

After the opening reception, the audience was free to decide where they wished to go for the rest of the evening. The PAC featured scenes from this Fall’s Musical Theater production “The Addams Family”, the Theater Improv Group, All New England Music Festival Vocal Solos, and Dance Solos. The connector featured BFA Seniors Julia Parent and Will Austin, Nicolas Farinaccio, and Owen Powers (Junior) in extended sets of original music and cover songs. The gym housed the large ensembles including the City School 8th Grade Jazz Combo directed by Zach Kelly, the BFA Chorus and Combined Chamber Singers of BFA and SATEC directed by Armand Messier and Aram Barsumian, and BFA Bands 1,2, & 3 and Jazz Band directed by Eric Bushey. The evening concluded with Band 3 and the BFA String Ensemble combining to present a full orchestra composition.

Visual Art Teachers Gerry Stoner, Dee Christie, and Karen Yandow put together a first-rate show of their student's art, much of which is still up and on display in the connector. Theater groups were directed by BFA Drama instructor Susan Palmer and Dance was presented by BFA Dance teacher Colleen McHugh.

The Fine Arts Department is planning to hold this event again next December and wishes to thank the BFA Custodial Department, Athletic Director Dan Marlow and  Assistant Anthony Sorrentino, and the BFA and Maple Run administration for their support in making this event happen.

NHS members bake goodies to say "Thanks"!
NHS members chose to bake brownies and chocolate chip cookies, so they could thank BFA's custodial staff and the Abbey employees for all that they do for us.

Local Speakers in Global Citizenship Class

Students in Global Citizenship classes are learning about the UN Sustainable Development Goals and our new Engagement Coordinator, Jamie Bristol, has organized several speakers from local organizations to help them see what the goals look like in action!

This week we hosted Upward Bound to speak about two goals: Addressing Poverty & the importance of Quality Education. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.
